The Chakra system has its roots in Hindu culture. The first 'written' mention of the term chakra is in the Vedas, the four Holy books of the Hindus, dating back to before 2,500 BC.
Not the "New Fangled Mumbo Jumbo" that some people suppose. However since pre-Vedic societies where mystics and yogis passed on knowledge by practice and stories (before writing), the idea of seven centres, or 'maps', of conciousness for holistic wellbeing was strongly held; wherever that culture was based.
We are told that there are many chakras through the human body, with more being 'discovered' all the time. Traditionally , as stated, Hindu medicine worked with the seven main chakras.

Here you can see the site of each chakra. Each one resonates at a different wave length, corresponding to a particular colour.
Each chakra is associated with a specific organ or major gland in the body. Also emotions are effected by the chakras. Therefore if a chakra is blocked or too open all manner of physical, emotional and spiritual problems can arise. When chakras are balanced we have holistic well-being.
There are many ways that we can treat the chakras. Through Universal Healing, Reiki, Crystal therapy, Meditation, Dowsing, Colour therapy and more. You can have treatment from a therapist, but can also learn how to scan and balance your chakras yourself. (See Therapies and Treatments, and also Courses.)
