The elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water have always been harnessed  and wielded by shamans, and other energy/magick workers, all over the world for thousands of years, if not forever. Elementals are energy forms of the four elements.

In European magickal traditions, and from them also American pagan belief systems, the Elementals have been called by the names Gnomes, Sylphs, Salamanders and Undines. 

Gnomes were/are believed to be beings that can mold and shape the elements , gems and rocks of the Earth into fantastical objects and things of great beauty. They could, it was said move through the body of the Earth like you or I would swim through water.

Sylphs were/are beings of air, often depicted as ethereal females. They can harness this element for good or bad. Causing cooling breezes or hurricanes at will. They were also thought to be the messengers of the "Old Ones", Gods etc.

Salamanders were/are beings of fire. Lizard like creatures born in the heart of volcanoes. They were thought to be impervious to fire and could also be used to burn things at distance by invoking them.

Undines were/are beings of water. Maidens that lived in rivers and pools. They brought life to plants and people alike, without water we all perish. Again, depending on the morals of the user, they can be harnessed for good or evil.

Often when I am called to help a person who has told me  that they have had a "demon" put on them I find that what we are really dealing with is a harnessed Elemental. Someone, with a little more ability than brains, has called up this poor being and 'attached' it to the person they want to harm or torment.

The afflicted person may be experiencing all kinds of scary, uncomfortable or painful effects. They try "sending it back", "cutting the bonds" or putting up extra protection to no avail. They bring in people to perform Spirit Rescue with no affect. They perform rituals, and much more to remove the "demon".

The reason that they fail is not because the person who has created the attachment is so much stronger than themselves, but because they are trying to remove something that is not there! Its like trying to remove a birthmark with spot cream. It just will not work!

The Elemental is just as much a victim as the human being afflicted. It has been "captured" and placed in an environment hostile to it.

What I have to do is identify the Elemental, and get it to leave the person. I usually transfer it into an appropriate object. Remove it from the persons house and take it to where it can be released safely. In other words returned to its natural element.

Divas are something else again. Divas are the natural Spirit/Soul/Heart of a place or thing. A tree, a pool, a wooded glade will all have their Divas. Whenever Steve or I are working with a plant or place we ask its Diva for permission. We do nothing to it that will ultimately harm it. If ever we need to remove or fell a plant we explain why and thank the Diva. We also leave something in place of whatever we take. This gift can take many forms. A blessing, plant food, water, a crystal or even a song from the heart.

Working with Divas is always a blessing and a privilege.
